Check for Understanding is a strategy we teach early on and use often when reading and listening. In this video, Rhonda works with two kindergarten students on what it looks like and sounds like to Check for Understanding. They are using a plastic checkmark with the prompts, "who?" and "what?" written on it.

Providing a physical checkmark for students to hold when they are in the role of the listener, helps them remember to use this strategy when their partner pauses reading. Teaching even our youngest readers to use this strategy helps build their muscle memory as to how and when to use this strategy.
