Katie VanNess is working with Julian, a third grader, on the comprehension strategy of summarizing. She encourages him to check for understanding at the end of each page to help hold his thinking so he can summarize at the end of each chapter.
She helps expand his vocabulary during the brief conference, and does a good-fit book check at the end. Some of our students need consistent monitoring and reinforcement of this important skill before they become independent.
